Charles and Katherine married in 1909 in St Berrien, MI. Many Chicago residents would take a boat ride across Lake Michigan and marry in St Berrian. Charles was 12 years older than Catherine.He was a machinist and by 1910 he was employed by the Western Electric company. They had two children, Evelyn Martha and Walter Adolph.
On July 24,1915, Charles and Catherine joined other Western Electric employees for the company's annual excursion. They boarded the "Eastland" for a day trip on the lake. The boat suddenly capsized while still tied to the dock. Charles and Catherine drowned, along with 842 other passengers and crew. Their children were 5 and 3.
